Poly(sodium acrylate) hydrogels as potential pH-sensitive sorbents for the removal of model organic and inorganic pollutants from water
General
Anionic poly(sodium acrylate), PANa, hydrogels bearing negatively charged –COO- groups were used as sorbents for the removal of colored organic or inorganic model pollutants, namely Crystal Violet and Cu2+, from water. It was found that PANa hydrogels adsorb stronger Cu2+ions than Crystal Violet, as...
A Critical Review of Natural Gas Flares-Induced Secondary Air Pollutants
General
Application of material balance analysis (in one of our previous studies) to natural gas flare in the upstream petroleum operations confirmed the emission of primary air pollutants in form of CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 from “sweet” natural gas while “sour” gas emits SO2 in addition; incomplete combustion...
Organic atmospheric pollutants: polycyclic hydrocarbons from coal atmospheric fluidised bed combustion (AFBC)
General
The work deals with coal combustion in a pilot-plant fluidised bed (7 cm i.d.) under atmospheric conditions. The aims are to capture and analyse qualitatively as well as quantitatively the volatile polycyclic hydrocarbons emitted by using coal as energy source under various combustion conditions...
Potential causes of high performance of pure-oxygen aerobic granules in SBR under high organic loading condition
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
Aerobic granules were cultivated using pure oxygen aeration (POAG) in SBR for wastewater treatment under high organic loading condition (HOLC) to reveal its performance and potential causes. Compared to conventional granules and activated sludge, mature POAG with more compact and dense structure...
Optimization of Analytical Methods for the Determination of Trace Concentrations of Toxic Pollutants in Drinking and Surface Waters
General
Pollutants posing health risks to human health and to the aquatic environment often occur in drinking and surface waters, as a result of disinfection practices, agricultural and industrial activities, wastewater discharges. Toxic pollutants belong to different chemical categories, including...
Activated carbon amendment to remediate contaminated sediments and soils: a review
General
Activated carbon (AC) amendment for reduction of contaminant exposure in polluted soils and sediments has recently emerged as a promising remediation technique. Here, we provide a short overview of the state-of-the-art in activated carbon (AC) amendment to such sites. Most studies not only in...
Organic pollutants removal from oilfield produced water using nano magnetite as adsorbent
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
The current study investigates the ability of Nano magnetite as an adsorbent to remove organic materials from oilfield-produced water (PW). The effect of several variables on the removal procedure was investigated, such as nano magnetite dose, pH of solution and adsorption period. The adsorbent was...
The California biomonitoring program: persistent organic pollutants in archived and contemporary serum
General
In 2006, California passed legislation establishing the first State Biomonitoring Program in the USA. The main goals are to: 1) Determine levels of environmental chemical contaminants in a representative sample of Californians; 2) Establish trends in the levels of these chemicals over time; 3)...
Highly efficient Cr(VI) removal by cationic covalent organic framework
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
Developing an efficient sorbent for removing the highly toxic Cr(VI) is very important, which tackles the threat of Cr(VI) pollution to ecological environment and human health. Herein, a cationic covalent organic framework bearing cationic guanidine (named TATGCl) was synthesized from...
Development of a biofilter media for removal of hydrogen sulphide
General
Industrial facilities emit pollutant air that contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and reduced sulphur compounds (RSCs) which are nuisance, corrosive to materials and dangerous to health. In recent years, biofiltration has replaced numerous conventional processes (i.e. adsorption) due to its...
Study of number of total mortality, cardiovascular and Respiratory mortality attributed to air pollutants of Tehran in 2005-2014
Air pollution and health
Over the last few decades, the evidence on the adverse effects on the health of air pollution has been raised. Mortality is the most important health effect of ambient air pollution. We studied the relation between mortality and criteria pollutant air in Tehran, one of the highly industrialized...
Short-Term Prediction of PM2.5 Pollution with Deep Learning Methods
Air pollution and health
Particulate matter (PM), classified according to aerodynamic diameter, is one of the harmful pollutants causing health damaging effects. It is considered as cancerogenic by the World Health Organization (WHO) because of the substances found in the chemical composition of PM. In this study, short...
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal by combining bio-scrubber and ozone pretreatment
Air pollution and health
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are toxic for the environment and human health and their tendency to readily volatilize in the atmosphere can lead to problems connected to odours annoyance. Conventional VOCs gaseous emissions treatments entail the application of chemical-physical processes, only...
