Rehabilitation of abandoned saltworks to maximize conservation, ecotourism and water treatment potential
General
Numerous saltworks have been abandoned throughout the Greek islands and mainland as operations have decreased in number and increased in size. Such areas have great potential for serving the broader society if rehabilitated correctly. Changes in landscape uses recently, especially agricultural...
Volatile organic compounds in the finished water of the water treatment plant in Thessaloniki, Greece
General
Chlorination has been the most widely used technology for the disinfection of drinking water around the world. The main purpose for the disinfection of drinking water is to protect it against microbial contamination in the distribution systems and to prevent or at least control re-growth of...
An agricultural waste as a novel coagulant aid to treat high turbid water containing humic acids
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
Production of potable water from most raw water sources usually uses the coagulation/flocculation process to remove turbidity. Alum is widely used as a coagulant. However, there is concern about its associated risk of Alzheimer disease. As a result, there has been considerable interest in the...
The formation of aldehydes and ketones ozonation by-products and their variation through general water treatment plant in Hamadan, Iran
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
The effect of pre-ozonation on the formation of four aldehydes (i.e. formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal, methyl glyoxal) and two ketones (i.e. pyruvic acid and glioxalic acid) at the Beheshti water treatment plant in Hamadan, Iran were studied. Water samples were taken from the treatment plant at...
Impact of Blackwater Disposal in Erbil City on Municipal Wastewater and Bounded Soil Characteristics with Potential Solutions
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
Direct discharge of black water (BW) without treatment to the natural environment causes problems for the environment. The present research aimed to examine the impact of direct disposal of BW on the municipal wastewater (MWW) and surrounded soil characteristics in the BW disposal site in Erbil City...
Degree of Wastewater Treatment versus Types of Reuses: Case Study, Saudi Arabia
Hydrology and Water Resources Management
The Council of Ministers issued a Royal decree number M/6 1421 H, corresponding to 2000 AD. The decree stated that, in Saudi Arabia, all wastewater should be treated at the tertiary level, without any discrimination (in terms of the type of reuse and discharge locations). The aim of this article is...
Electrochemical Treatment for Real Hospital Wastewater and its Future Prospect
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
Purpose: This study investigates the efficacy of electrochemical remediation techniques in treating hospital wastewater, focusing on parameters including turbidity, color, BOD, COD, DO, coliform, and E. coli. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study conducts a comprehensive analysis of various...
Biological treatment of water contaminated by hydrocarbons in three-phase gas-liquid-solid fluidized bed
General
Biological treatment has been carried out in two different systems: aerated closed and threephase fluidized bed reactors for hydrocarbons removal from refinery wastewaters. For the two systems, hydrodynamic study allowed the determination of operating conditions before treatment experiments. Then...
Treatment of oil production wastewater by membrane bioreactor
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
Wastewater generated in oil production and refinery industries contains high levels of pollutions. Water from the oil production field is the largest source of wastewater in the oil production and refinery industry. It can cause environmental problems on a global scale due to its high volume and...
