Optimal allocation of land and water resources in irrigated agriculture by means of Goal Programming: Application in Loudias River Basin
General
Agriculture is an economic activity that contributes significantly to the gross national product of a country, securing at the same time the viability of the rural sector and the social coherence. On the other hand, it can generate an environmental externality, especially concerning water resources...
Hill lakes: innovative approach for sustainable rural management in the semi-arid areas in Tunisia
Hydrology and Water Resources Management
In Tunisian semi-arid regions, where water is a rare commodity and the large dams cannot be justified considering the very limited water contributions and the very high evapotranspiration, innovative techniques of harvesting water have been adopted. Tunisia has initiated a policy of small dam...
Decision making in water resources with fuzzy information
General
The multiple objectives optimization in water resources planning consists in trading multiple and conflicting objectives, forming a complex and dynamic process. In the last four decades multiobjective decisions based on fuzzy sets have been evolved and considerable research spawned into the...
Environmental Sensitivity Index Analysis for coastal protection of oil spill in Fakfak, Papua, Indonesia
Environmental management and policy
This study was conducted to analysis of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) for anticipating the effect of oil spills on the environment in coastal areas. The study location is the coastal area and waters of the Karas District, Fakfak Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia. The purpose of the...
The broadcasting on INTERNET of water DPSIR indicators. Experiment on the Nestos delta, Greece
General
An initial GIS data base has been assembled in 2001 covering the various parameters related to the Nestos river basin and its delta. This data set is being used for water resources modelling purposes within the frame of the multinational PROMENES initiative. The initial data gathering has produced a...
Novel composite materials as P-adsorption agents and their potential application as fertilizers
Green Chemistry and Sustainable Development
The main objective of this study is to review the role of phosphorus in fertilizers, emphasizing in phosphate rock which is the primary source for phosphate fertilizer, with reference to harmful heavy metals as a consequence of their use. Simultaneously, this study examined the use of P-Adsorption...
Spatial-temporal evolution and influencing factors of urban ecosystem resilience
Environmental management and policy
Urban ecosystem resilience is a key concern in the strategy of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. This paper uses the principle of range maximization to construct an ecosystem resilience index measurement model from the four dimensions of energy, water...
Environmental impact assessment of a METRO infrastructure facility construction by modelling water and soil pollution
Environmental management and policy
The construction of large infrastructure projects such as highways, railroads, landfills, airports, harbours offers great social-economic opportunities for the development of a region; it is also mainly responsible for the deterioration of natural environment in the greater areas where these...
Utilization of brown seaweed adsorbent for effective removal of Pb(II) from wastewater: Biosorption and column studies
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse
Researchers have been focusing on protecting water quality and preventing environmental contamination caused by industrial discharge of heavy metals. Various methods have been explored for extracting these metals from wastewater, but they often prove to be costly and rely on non-renewable resources...
Leaching characteristics of wastes from Kemerkoy (Mugla-Turkey) power plant
General
A main problem related to coal ash disposal is the heavy metal content of the residue. In this regard, experimental results of numerous studies have indicated that toxic trace metals may leach when fly ash and bottom ash contacts with water. In this study, fly ash and bottom ash samples obtained...
Monitoring the changes of Lake Uluabat Ramsar site and its surroundings in the 1985-2021 period using RS and GIS methods
Environmental management and policy
Ramsar sites are important ecosystems that are protected by international status, have great value in terms of biodiversity, and constitute a resource in terms of economic, cultural, scientific and recreational aspects. In this study, the change of Lake Uluabat Ramsar Site and its surroundings...
A GIS model for landfill siting
General
The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for Landfill Sitting is studied. The necessary spatial information required to determine the candidate sites for any type of terrestrial area (Community/Prefecture/Region/Country) is examined. This spatial information is then used for site selection...
Benefits, Challenges and Sucess Factors of Water Safety Plan Implementation: A Review
Hydrology and Water Resources Management
Drinking water supply is a preeminent to public health, environmental protection, quality of life, economic activity, and sustainable development. Many disasters are being recorded due to poor water quality every day. In this case, it is essential to assure safe water demand through continuous...
Utilization of nanomaterials and ceramic waste for sustainable environmental protection
Solid Waste Management
The amount and type of waste are increasing due to population growth. Many harmful materials have been in the atmosphere for a very long times. This causes a crisis in the waste disposal and thereby contributes to environmental issues. Recycling concrete manufacturing waste materials not only offers...
A multicriteria approach to evaluate offshore wind farms siting in Greece
General
Wind energy offers significant potential for greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Most applications have been developed onshore but the planning and siting conflicts with other land uses have created considerable interest and motivated research to offshore wind energy establishments. In this paper...
Modelling and simulation of a catchment in order to evaluate water resources
General
It is difficult for decision-makers to evaluate the impact of their territorial policies. Aspects to be considered in this evaluation include those relating to humans, environment protection and industry development. Two reasons explain the difficulty: decision-makers cannot specialise in all...
El-Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO): Recent Evolution and Possibilities for Long Range Flow Forecasting in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna River
General
The El Nino-Southern Oscillation is the dominant pattern of short-term climate variation, and is therefore of great importance in climate studies.
