An exploratory alternative approach to potential incident simulation, control, and evaluation system simulation for prediction of oil spill behavior through supervised machine learning
Environmental data analysis and modelling
The incidents occurring within the marine environment are supported by various Decision Support Systems (DSS), both in simulation and intervention. Accurate and real-time data inputs into these systems greatly contribute to the effective and prompt decision-making process. However, the absence of...
The peak path of provincial carbon emissions in the Yellow River Basin of China Based on scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulation method
Environmental management and policy
The Yellow River Basin is an important economic zone in China and an important base for energy, chemical, raw materials and basic industries. However, the sloppy development pattern of "high consumption and high pollution" in nine provinces along the Yellow River Basin has become an important...
Comparison of a black-box model to a traditional numerical model for Hydraulic Head Prediction
General
Two different methodologies for hydraulic head simulation were compared in this study. The first methodology is a classic numerical groundwater flow simulation model, Princeton Transport Code (PTC), while the second one is a black-box approach that uses Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Both...
Hydraulic models for the simulation of flow routing in drainage canals
General
In order to design a network of drainage canals, it is essential to consider the excess water from the agricultural land (overland flow) and to evaluate the characteristics of flow routing, such as the flow depths and discharges in the system of tertiary and main drainage canals of various order. In...
Simulation of brackish karst springs operation with the MODKARST deterministic model
General
A simulation is presented of the operation of brackish karst springs with the MODKARST deterministic mathematical model. Through this simulation, major issues regarding the operation mechanisms as well as the sustainable development of the springs are addressed and analyzed. The particular case...
Quantification of climate-tourism potential for Athens, Greece – Recent and future climate simulations
Climate change
The aim of this paper is to present in a useful and understandable way how climatic change could be interpreted for tourism and recreation. Future climate change conditions are analyzed using the Climate Version of the Local Model (CLM) based on the COSMO model, which is currently used – among other...
Modeling the 3-d flow around a cylinder using the SAS hybrid model
General
Three-dimensional calculations were performed to simulate the flow around a cylindrical vegetation element using the Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) model; commonly, this is the first step of the modeling of the flow through multiple vegetation elements. SAS solves the Reynolds Averaged Navier...
Wind-field and pollution-dispersion simulation in a street canyon in Helsinki with ADREA-HF code
General
ADREA-HF, which is a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, is utilised in order to numerically study the flow and concentration fields within a street-canyon area. The selected site is Runeberg Str., a typical urban street canyon with an aspect ratio of approximately 1:1 in Helsinki, Finland. The...
CFD simulation of multiphase flow in an airlift column photobioreactor
Sustainable Energy
A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation using CFX, ANSYS 11.0, has been carried out using a multiphase flow model with an Eulerian-Eulerian approach for an airlift column photobioreactors (PBR). Transient simulations were performed for three inlet air flow, 2, 3 and 5 l/min. The contours for...
