Urban traffic and air quality evolution under economic recession conditions
General
This paper deals with the impacts of the current economic crisis on the temporal variation of urban traffic (during 2008-11) and consequently, the impacts on the urban air pollutant levels using as case study the city of Thessaloniki, Greece. The important temporal variations of the main economic...
Integrated urban water modelling using Aquacycle model
General
The traditional approach to urban water management is primarily based on a supply-oriented approach, where water follows a one-way path from supply to a single use, treatment and then discharged to the environment. The wide acknowledgement of the need to shift towards more sustainable practices has...
Influence and its spatial verification of digital economy development on carbon emission intensity from urban energy consumption
Environmental management and policy
In order to explore the influence of digital economy development on carbon emission intensity from urban energy consumption, digital economy development is incorporated into the reduction framework of carbon emission intensity from urban energy consumption in this paper. With carbon emission...
Exploration of Composting Strategies for Sustainable Organic Waste Management in Urban Environments
Solid Waste Management
The management of organic waste in urban environments poses significant challenges due to the high volume of waste generated and limited disposal options. Composting is a promising technique for converting organic waste into valuable compost that can be used to improve soil health and reduce the...
Atmospheric PM10 particle concentration measurements at central and peripheral urban sites in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece
General
The analysis of the PM10 particle measurements at the two major urban areas of Greece, Athens and Thessaloniki, showed that the mean monthly PM10 concentrations at the central urban stations, are on the average about twice as high than the corresponding ones at the examined peripheral stations. The...
Industrial co-agglomeration, green finance and urban carbon emission efficiency: Empirical evidence from Shandong province in China
Climate change
This study explores the impact of industrial co-agglomeration on urban carbon emission efficiency in Shandong Province from China during 2007 to 2020. The moderating effect model is constructed to explore the role green finance in the impact of industrial co-agglomeration on urban carbon emission...
Enrichment of sediments in urban rivers by heavy metals
Air pollution and health
The heavy metals contained in sediments may be responsible for constant degradation of rivers’ water quality, which circulate in an urban environment. Therefore, this study shows the pollution index and enrichment factor for each of these elements in river sediments. It was used the optical emission...
Distribution characteristics and health risk assessment of PAEs in urban soils of Changji City, Xinjiang, China
Environmental Sciences
Recent studies have indicated that PAEs (phthalic acid esters) are significant environmental pollutants with carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. Urban soils can act as both a source and sink for city contaminants. This paper takes Changji, Xinjiang in Northwest China as the study area...
Air Pollution and Urban Economic Growth: A Study Based on Dynamic Models
Environmental management and policy
With China's economic growth, the issue of air pollution has become increasingly prominent. As the core of political and economic development, 184 major cities in China face severe air pollution and significant environmental pressures due to high population density. Consequently, China has...
Waste management in urban environments: Insights of the citizens’ views in a densely populated municipality in Greece
Solid Waste Management
Urbanization, industrialization and economic growth have considerable challenged the orientation of waste management policies and practices. Intrinsically, major concerns appear in urban environments, as they receive increased volumes of waste, which in turn pose threats for the environment and...
Selection of forest species for use in urban environment in relation to their potential capture to heavy metals
