Seasonal variations in ecological parameters exert a profound effect on the distribution and population density of both animal and plant species (Odum, 1971). The productivity in terms of planktonic biomass in freshwater bodies is regulated by various physico-chemical factors viz., temperature...
SIMULTANEOUS CARBON AND NUTRIENT REMOVAL FROM DAIRY WASTEWATER IN SEQUENCING BATCH REACTOR (SBR)
Water and Wastewater Treatment
Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is a time-oriented wastewater treatment (WWT) system in a single reactor with flow and energy input according to the predetermined operational cycle time. The treatment efficiency of SBR varies with the duration of the cycle time, which affects the reactor size and...
Diatom records in sediments for eutrophication process of Lake Xian'nv, China since the mid-20th century
Ecological effects of Environmental change
To well understand the eutrophication process for inland lakes where more lands had been used for agriculture and industry without adequate environmental protections, 9 surface sediments and 1 core sediment in Lake Xian’nv which was located in the middle of Jiangxi Province were chosen. Combined...
Impact of environmental conditions on photosynthesis, growth and carbon allocation strategies of hypersaline species of Dunaliella
General
Hypersaline environments pose a number of ecological and metabolic challenges to the organisms that live in them. Primary producers, such as halotolerant species of the green microalgal genus Dunaliella, are no exception. In this paper we focus on the problems posed to the acquisition and metabolism...
Water quantity and quality monitoring of Kosynthos river, North-Eastern Greece
General
An investigation of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of Kosynthos river flow is presented. Four monitoring sites were established along Kosynthos river for the period October 2003 to October 2005 where discharge and water quality parameters were monitored. River flow processes have...
Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Organic Carbon in Main Rivers of the Western Greece
General
Results of a monitoring project for the water quality of three important rivers of western Greece (Acheloos, Louros and Acherontas) are presented in this paper. The results include the concentrations as well as the temporal and spatial distributions of nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, ammonia and...
Extraction of biodiesel from wastewater using microalgae Chlorella Vulgaris
Water and Wastewater Treatment
An experimental research on production of biodiesel from lipids of chlorella vulgaris has been done through transesterification reaction process. The series of chlorella vulgaris cultures has been carried out and the optimum growth time was determined. The biodiesel synthesis is processed by two...
Hydrochemical and Ecological Quality Assessment of a Mediterranean River System
General
In order to explore the complex interrelations among the factors and processes that determine a rivers’ hydrochemical and biological quality, statistical techniques were applied to a variety of hydrochemical, petrologic, biological, habitat, hydrological and morphologic data from 16 sites of the...
Multivariate Statistical Analysis of pollutants in Ennore creek, South-East coast of India.
Water Quality
Multivariate statistical techniques involving factor analysis (FA) and dendrograms for hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were performed on nine water samples from Ennore Creek, Chennai, Tamil Nadu to assess the spatial distribution of water quality in each of three seasons. The water samples were...
Physicochemical parameters and nutrients variations of streams and rivers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria
General
Physicochemical parameters and nutrient loads of major rivers and streams in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State were studied for a period of seven (7) months from May to November, 2011. Regular and constant monitoring of water bodies is vital to ensure that water quality characteristics are maintained. The...
Hydrochemical Fluxes in Rainfall, Throughfall, and Stemflow in Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Plantation, northeast China
Hydrology and water resources
Rainfall is one of the primary sources of chemical inputs in forest ecosystems, and the basis of forest nutrient cycling. Urban trees play an important role in the built environment, reducing the rainfall reaching the ground by rainfall interception. To explore the variations of nutrient cycling and...
Physiological response of ectomycorrhizal fungi (Lactarius delicious) to microplastics stress
