Soil adsorption behaviour and photomineralization by photocatalytic membranes immobilizing titanium dioxide of atrazine and intermediates
General
The soil adsorption behaviour of atrazine and its photodegradation intermediate 4,6-diamino-2-chloro-1,3,5- s-triazine (I), was evaluated by measuring partition coefficients on five representative European topsoils using classical batch experiments. From this study, (I) appears to be less...
Real-Time Detection Method for Heavy Metal Pollution in Soil of Mining Area
CLEANWAS
Solid wastes and acid wastewater lead to the enrichment of heavy metals in the soil of mining area. Heavy metal pollution causes the decline of soil quality, ecosystem degradation, crop yield reduction, and even threatens human health. For this reason, the real-time detection method for heavy metal...
Influence of Diphenyloxide Disulfonate Surfactants on Biodegradation of Hydrocarbons
General
Testing was conducted with anionic diphenyloxide disulfonate (DPDS) surfactants (C12 and C16 alkyl moieties) with naphthalene in aqueous systems and phenanthrene in soil systems to investigate the influence of these surfactants on biodegradation of hydrocarbons. A potential for enhancement in the...
An Overview of Chemical Oxidation Based Remediation technologies for Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids Removal from Soil
Emerging pollutants
This review provides a general overview of the application of chemical oxidation to hydrophobic contaminants in the form of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). Three types of chemical oxidation processes, conventional activated persulfate, permanganate, and ozonation, along with three advanced...
Potential of biowastes to remediate diesel fuel contaminated soil
General
The unintended release of hydrocarbons into the environment can negatively impact human and animal health, and could further change the characteristics of soils. The aim of the present work was to investigate the rate of biodegradation at 10 and 20% diesel fuel in contaminated soil amended with 10%...
Biodegradation of natural bitumen by Providencia stuartii isolated from heavy oil contaminated soil
Pollution Control Technology
Abundance and availability of unconventional petroleum has led to intensified exploitation and exploration of the bitumen reserves. This has however led to environmental pollution. This study investigated the ability of Providencia stuartii isolated from heavy oil polluted soil to degrade natural...
Bioremediation of actual soil samples with high levels of crude oil using a bacterial consortium isolated from two polluted sites: investigation of the survival of the bacteria
General
In this study, actual soil samples, taken from Kharg Island, Iran, with high levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) were bioremediated by a bacterial consortium. The strains were: Pseudomonas sp., Stenotrophomonas sp., Achromobacter sp., Brevibacillus sp. and Staphylococcus sp., which were...
Removal of lindane and Escherichia coli (E.coli) from rainwater using photocatalytic and adsorption treatment processes
Water and Wastewater Treatment
Low concentrations of contaminants in rainwater is the primary benefit of transforming it as an alternative source of drinking water. However, treatment is necessary as rainwater collects contaminants that are persistent in the environment such as lindane and E.coli. The combination of...
Screening of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria using redox indicator 2, 6-dichlorophenol indophenol.
Pollution Control Technology
Petroleum products are used in different forms in auto-mechanic workshops every day. Spent motor oil disposed-off improperly contains potentially toxic substances which can seep into the water tables and contaminate ground water. This study involved isolation and screening of bacterial species...
Biodegradation of aniline by Enterobacter ludwigii KH-5 isolated from the soil around Shiraz refinery, Iran
Pollution Control Technology
Aniline is a harmful substance that pollutes the environment and seriously endangers human health. In the present study five different bacteria were enriched and isolated from the soil around Shiraz refinery (Iran) as aniline degrading bacteria. They were identified as Enterobacter ludwigii KH-5...
Assessment of soil susceptibility to erosion using the EPM and RUSLE models: the case of Venetikos river catchment
Water Resources Management
The study aims to evaluate soil erosion and investigate its spatial distribution by applying two empirical models, namely the Erosion Potential Model (EPM), also known as Gavrilovic method, and the RUSLE model at Venetikos River catchment, the largest and most important tributary of Aliakmonas River...
Mechanical properties of Biodegradable Composite Developed by Modification of Poly lactic Acid with Orange Peel Powder
Solid Waste Management
One of the biggest environmental issues has been the use and disposal of traditional fossil-based plastic, which is not biodegradable and uses a lot of energy in its production. Poly lactic acid (PLA) has received a lot of attention as an environmentally friendly substitute due to the fact that it...
The reuse of municipal wastewater in soils
Water and Wastewater Treatment
The idea of wastewater application on soils, returned to Western Hemisphere during 1950-60. Modern living requires an increased per capita use of water for coverage of individual needs. Nowadays, two main principles related to water management seem to gain the attention of both the scientific...
Eco-water diversion project is not a simply measure to improve the ecological environment
Climate change mitigation and adaptation
The Heihe River is the second longest inland river in China, which is one of the most important inland river basins in the northwest area. The effect of drought on ecological environment can be exacerbated by climate change. Eco-water diversion project was implemented since 2000 to solve the...
Co-composting of meat packing wastewater sludge and organic fraction of municipal solid waste
